These three creations are redressed Pelham Cinderella puppets with moulded high-heeled legs.
Each has a full layered lace trimmed petticoat skirt and velvet bodice trimmed in an individual style depending on the design. Each wears a pair of lacy pantalets under their petticoats.
The hair has been restyled and then decorated with various trims and topped with feathers. The faces have been retouched with enamels and the shoes painted in a corresponding colour to their gowns.
These three were commissioned by a regular patron.
I thoroughly enjoyed working on these and took a lot of inspiration from Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge (which happens to be one of my favourite films) when deciding on the individual character of each puppet. The red and black was particularly influenced by Caroline O'Connor as Nini-Legs-in-the-Air and the pink by 'Baby Doll'. As a matter of interest the four leading can-can dancers at the real moulin Rouge (including Nini) were known as the 'Four Whores of the Apocalypse' as the dancers also worked as courtesans as well along side their theatrical exploits. Everybody do the Can-Can!
